Dr. Dan Ciccarone is the Justine Miner Professor in Addiction Medicine, in the department of Family and Community Medicine, at UCSF. He has been principal or co-investigator on numerous NIH sponsored public health research projects including his current Synthetics in Combination (SYNC) study. He is a recognized international scholar on the medical, public health and public policy dimensions of substance use, risk and consequences. He consults for numerous private and public entities including the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
For over 20 years "Dr. Dan" has been actively involved in expanding the use of clinical harm reduction technologies and services, e.g., naloxone, buprenorphine, and drug checking. He has provided harm reduction based clinical services at several SF syringe exchanges and is currently the volunteer Medical Director of Remedy Alliance, the US’ largest not-for-profit wholesale distributor of naloxone.

The in-person event will be held in Baldwin Auditorium of the Lurie Medical Research Building at 303 E. Superior; Chicago. Boxed lunch will be provided for in person attendees.**
This presentation will describe the four waves of opioid-related overdose, some aspects of which are driven by supply, and then dive into the current and possible future fentanyl use patterns and consequences.

IPHAM Public Health seminar — Andrew Papachristos on 'Blueprints for Safety: Engaged Science and the Story of Collaborative Gun Violence Prevention in Chicago'

In 2017, a collective of gun violence prevention organizations in Chicago came together not simply to develop more "programs," but to draft plans for a broader civilianized approach to public safety that centered community violence intervention (CVI) efforts. Drawing on observational, interview, survey, and even quasi-experimental data collected through an engaged research partnership, this talk will discuss the lessons learned over the last five years about program effectiveness and about the deep and powerful nature of CVI work and its potential for changing the future of public safety.

Andrew V. Papachristos' research aims to understand how the connected nature of cities how their citizens, neighborhoods, and institutions are tied to one another affect what we feel, think, and do. His main area of research applies network science to the study of gun violence, police misconduct, illegal gun markets, street gangs, and urban neighborhoods. He has more than 15 years of experience working in the area of engaged research, having partnered with community groups, state and local criminal justice agencies, schools, hospitals, and government agencies.

IPHAM Public Health seminar — James Fox on Mass Shootings in Schools, Workplaces, and Other Public Settings

Recent mass shootings resulting in large numbers of fatalities have both shocked the American public, with many believing there to be an epidemic of bloodshed and even avoiding certain places. This presentation will examine the trends, patterns, and contributing factors underlying these tragedies with special attention to school massacres. The widespread concern that mass shootings are surging has encouraged a number of policy proposals some worthwhile yet others ill-advised. This presentation will attempt to add perspective to perceptions of risk and critically assess some of the solutions that have been advanced by politicians and the public alike.

The Lipman Family Professor of Criminology, Law, and Public Policy
Northeastern University
James Alan Fox has published 18 books, dozens of journal and magazine articles, and hundreds of freelance columns in newspapers around the country, primarily in the areas of mass murder, serial murder youth crime, school and campus violence, workplace violence, and capital punishment. As a member of its Board of Contributors, his column appears regularly in USA TODAY. In addition, he was the founding editor of the Journal of Quantitative Criminology.
Fox is one of the principals in maintaining the Associated Press/USA TODAY/Northeastern University Mass Killing Database. He has led or worked on criminal investigations surrounding serial and mass murder cases, served as an expert witness in over a dozen of civil cases related to multiple homicide, and was a visiting fellow with the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
